Here's how it works

1

Add a secret

Store passwords, files, documents.

2

We only see gibberish

Your data is end-to-end encrypted. Even we can't read it.

3

Pick who can request it

Choose trusted contacts. Set a waiting time for each.

4

Approve, deny, or ignore

When someone requests access, you decide.

5

Can't respond? Your safety net kicks in.

Unreachable? The timer runs out. They get access. That's your safety net.

What People Use AbsentKey For

One vault. Many reasons to share on your terms.

Family password vault

Share Passwords with Family

Your kid's heading to college. Give them the Netflix and WiFi right away. For the savings account and insurance login, set a waiting time. They'll request access when they actually need it. You decide.

Encrypted vault for files

Protect Your Sources

You're a journalist with files that matter. Research, contacts, unreleased work. Store them encrypted. Pick someone you trust. Your editor, a colleague. Even if your phone is seized, your work reaches them.

Crypto inheritance

Crypto Keys

Seed phrases, wallet keys, and recovery docs in one vault. Your heirs get access only when the time is right.

Dead man's switch

Traveling Abroad

Going off the grid? Set a longer timer before you leave. If you're unreachable, your partner gets what they need. Passwords, files, everything.

Emergency access

Couples Who Share Everything

You both know the Netflix login. But what about the bank, the insurance, the mortgage portal, tax documents? Set instant access for everyday stuff. Set a waiting time for the rest. Your terms.

Digital legacy planning · Password inheritance

Business Credentials

Your co-founder needs the AWS keys, the Stripe login, the DNS panel, the contracts folder. Not now. But maybe someday. Add them, set the rules, forget about it.

No "prove you're alive" nonsense

Dead man's switch apps make you check in daily or weekly. Miss one and your secrets get released. AbsentKey only triggers when someone actually requests access.

We can't read your secrets. Nobody can.

Everything is encrypted on your phone before it leaves. Our servers only store scrambled data. No analytics, no tracking. Even if we got hacked, attackers get nothing.

Not a password manager.

Password managers are for your access to your stuff. AbsentKey is for someone else's access to your stuff. When you decide. Or when you can't decide anymore. Different problem. Different tool.

Receiving is free. Forever.

Your trusted contacts never pay. They download the app, receive your secrets, done. No account upgrade required.

Frequently asked questions

The Waiting Time

What is the waiting time?

The waiting time is your safety net. When someone requests access, you get notified. If you approve, they get it instantly. If you deny, they don't. If you can't respond before the waiting time runs out, access is granted automatically. You set the time (1 day to 365 days) for each recipient.

What happens when I become unreachable?

Your trusted contacts can request access. You'll get notified. If you can't respond for any reason, the waiting time you set ensures they get access automatically. No one else needs to intervene.

Is AbsentKey a dead man's switch?

Not just another one. AbsentKey is a secret sharing app. A dead man's switch is just one of the things it can do. You can also share secrets instantly, approve requests on the spot, or set a waiting time and let the timer handle it. Same safety net, way more flexibility.

Recovery Key

What is my recovery key?

A set of 12 words generated when you create your first secret. These words are the master key to everything you store. Without them, your secrets cannot be decrypted by anyone, including us.

What if I lose my recovery key?

Your secrets are gone. Permanently. We can't recover them because we never had access to your encryption keys. Write it down. Keep it safe. This is not a warning we can help you with later.

Pricing

What can I do for free?

Receive secrets others share with you and request access when needed. To create and share your own secrets, you need Premium.

Do my recipients need to pay?

No. Receiving is always free. They download the app, receive your secrets, done.

Security

Is AbsentKey open-source?

Our mobile client is source-available. You can read every line of code on GitHub. Every encryption call, every network request, everything that happens on your device. The license lets you inspect and verify, but not clone it into a competing product.

What encryption does AbsentKey use?

Your secrets are encrypted on your device with XSalsa20-Poly1305 using libsodium. Keys are exchanged via X25519 and derived from your 12-word recovery phrase using HKDF-SHA256. Your encryption keys never leave your phone. Read the full implementation in our source code.

About AbsentKey

How is AbsentKey different from a password manager?

Password managers store your passwords for you. AbsentKey shares your passwords with others when the time is right. Most password managers bury emergency access in settings. AbsentKey was built for it.

What happens to my passwords if something happens to me?

Your trusted contacts can request access. If you can't respond, the waiting time you set runs out and they get your passwords, files, and private info automatically. No lawyer, no probate, no delay.

Can I store crypto seed phrases in AbsentKey?

Yes. AbsentKey works as secure seed phrase storage. Store seed phrases, wallet passwords, exchange credentials, and any crypto-related info. Set a waiting time per person. Your recipients get access only when you approve or can't respond. Your crypto inheritance, handled.

How do I share passwords with my family in case of emergency?

Add your passwords to AbsentKey, pick family members as recipients, and set a waiting time for each. If they request access and you can't respond, the timer runs out and they get everything. No daily check-ins required.

Can I use AbsentKey as a digital will?

Yes. AbsentKey works as a digital will for your passwords, files, and private info. Add everything you want to pass on, pick your recipients, and set a waiting time. If you can't respond, they get access automatically. No lawyer, no notary, no probate court.

What happens to my passwords when I die?

Without a plan, your passwords die with you. AbsentKey changes that. Your trusted contacts can request access. If you can't respond, the waiting time runs out and they get your passwords, files, and private info. Your digital life, passed on to the people you chose.
