Five quiet moves. You stay in control of every step.
Add a secret
Passwords, photos, files, notes. Encrypted on your phone the moment you save.
Back it up
Optional cloud sync. Keys stay on your phone. We see only ciphertext.
Pick recipients
Up to 5 per secret. Different rule per person. Instant, approval, or timer.
Approve or deny
Notification on every request. One tap. Or ignore. The timer takes over.
Safety net handles it
If you can't respond within the waiting time, recipients get exactly what you chose.
One vault for the private stuff. One place to share when you want.
Your notes app isn't private
IDs, codes, sensitive photos, the passwords you actually use. Move them somewhere encrypted. Free, offline, forever. The app does this without an account.
Share passwords with family
Kid heading to college. Netflix and WiFi now, waiting time on the bank login. They request access when they need it.
Crypto keys, passed on
Seed phrases, wallet keys, exchange recoveries. Heirs get them only when the time is right, and only the ones you assigned.
Going off the grid?
Set a longer timer before you leave. If you're unreachable, your partner gets what they need. No daily check-ins required.
Protect your sources
Research, contacts, unreleased work, all encrypted on your phone, share-able with one editor. Even if your phone is seized, your work reaches them.
Share everything important
Bank, insurance, mortgage portal, tax docs. Instant access on the everyday stuff, waiting time on the rest. Both protected.
Your phone holds the key. Our servers hold gibberish.
Zero-knowledge architecture. Every secret is encrypted on your phone with a key derived on-device. Keys never leave. If someone hacks our servers tomorrow, they get encrypted blobs nobody on earth can decrypt.
// vault.ts // Encrypt the secret payload before it leaves the device. async function sealSecret(plaintext: Uint8Array) { const key = await getDeviceKey(); const nonce = randomBytes(12); const ciphertext = await aesGcmSeal(key, nonce, plaintext); return { nonce, ciphertext }; }
The vault is free. Sharing is the part you pay for.
And we kept it cheap. $0.99 a month or $9.99 a year.

Common questions, honestly answered.
What is the waiting time?
Your safety net. When someone requests access, you get notified. Approve and they get it instantly. Deny and they don't. If you can't respond before the waiting time runs out, access is granted automatically. You set the time per recipient, anywhere from a day to a year.
What happens if I become unreachable?
Your trusted contacts can request access. You'll get notified. If you can't respond for any reason, the waiting time you set ensures they get access automatically. No one else needs to intervene.
Is AbsentKey just a dead man's switch?
Not just one. AbsentKey is a secret-sharing app, and a dead man's switch is one of the things it can do. You can also share secrets instantly, approve requests on the spot, or set a waiting time and let the timer handle it. Same safety net, way more flexibility.
What can I do for free?
Everything the vault does. Store unlimited secrets on your phone, encrypted, works offline after unlock. You only pay for Premium if you want cloud backup across devices or want to share with people you trust.
Do recipients have to pay anything?
Never. The people you trust download the app and receive your secrets, done. No upgrade required. No surprise paywall the day someone needs your hospital information.
Can I store crypto seed phrases in AbsentKey?
Yes. Store seed phrases, wallet passwords, exchange credentials, and any crypto-related info. Set a waiting time per person. Your recipients only get access when you approve or can't respond.
Can I use it as a digital will?
Yes. Add everything you want to pass on, pick your recipients, set a waiting time. If you can't respond, they get access automatically. No lawyer, no notary, no probate court.
How is the vault encrypted?
Each secret is encrypted on your phone with AES-256-GCM and a per-secret key. Keys are derived on-device and never leave. We can't read what we store. If our servers are breached, attackers get encrypted blobs only.

Photo Vault Apps: What Actually Encrypts Your Photos
Most 'photo vault' apps just move your photos into a hidden folder. Here is how real encrypted photo vaults work and how to pick one that is actually private.
Is AbsentKey Safe? Security Explained
AbsentKey can't read your passwords. Not 'won't.' Can't. How zero-knowledge encryption and request-based access keep your secrets safe.
The Dead Man's Switch That Doesn't Make You Check In
Most dead man's switch apps make you prove you're alive. Miss a check-in and your secrets leak. AbsentKey only acts when someone asks.
Your vault is free. Your rules when you share.
Encrypted on your phone. Backed up if you want. Shared with the people you trust, when you say so.
